10 Things to Know About Crime Boss: Rockay City
10 Things to Know About Crime Boss: Rockay City
Since Crime Boss: Rockay City will soon be releasing on Steam, June 18th, we expect a lot of new arrivals to Rockay City! Tackling this town can be a lot, so here is our list of 10 things to know when you play Crime Boss: Rockay City.
1. Redefining the Genre
When it comes to heisting games, there’s nothing quite like Crime Boss: Rockay City. Combining heists with strategic gameplay and asset management is something you won’t find anywhere else. With dozens of different jobs, each with multiple variations, there is no shortage of opportunities in your criminal pursuits. Each and every one of these missions, of course, can be completed in the single-player campaign, Baker’s Battle, or with up to three friends in multiplayer PvE.
2. Choices That Make or Break You
In the single-player campaign, Baker’s Battle, your goal is to become the new underworld leader and be crowned ‘King’ of Rockay City. Along the way, certain actions will present different opportunities that can either help or hinder you. For example, you might be given the option to hand over the profits of your last major score to a rival gang leader. In return, they will leave the city, clearing the territory for you to take over— but only if you can get to it first. You might also choose to free an ally before they go in for questioning. However, should you fail, the evidence against you will be overwhelming, greatly speeding up the police investigation. There are many of these instances, so weigh your options carefully.
3. Sheriff Norris’ Investigation
Enemy gangs and turf disputes are not the only things that you will need to contend with. Sheriff Norris has been tasked with taking back Rockay City from the dregs that are currently vying for power, and he’s starting with you. As you complete missions and take turfs, the heat will rise, resulting in a faster and more aggressive police presence when jobs go loud. This is reset at the start of each new day. However, as each day passes, the Sheriff’s investigation into your actions will progress. Should he complete his investigation before you are able to take over the city, you will be forced to flee. There are a few ways to slow down his investigation, which will be necessary on higher difficulties. You can bribe police, kill detectives, or free arrested crew members before they have time to be questioned.
4. Managing Your Crew
There are dozens of different heisters to pick from to build your perfect crew. Some have their own unique backstories, but all of them have their own style and traits. There are three heister classes: the ‘Merc’, specializing in combat and dealing heavy damage; the ‘Thief’, perfect for infiltration and staying under the radar; and the ‘Brute’, able to take large amounts of damage while covering your escape.
Then there are the ‘Legends,’ unique heisters that can be leveled up many times and sometimes brandish their own signature weapons. Finally, there’s the ‘Boss,’ able to run two jobs a day in the campaign and increase profits by fifty percent when taken on missions. However, if the boss dies, it’s game over. Any of the characters can gain experience on jobs and be promoted, which will award them new perks.
Each job is different and will require different skills, so make sure you bring the right people for each heist.
5. Keeping Quiet
Most jobs can be completed entirely in stealth. Aside from just getting everyone out alive, there are multiple reasons why you might prefer to keep things quiet, including a slower investigation speed and higher returns on stolen goods. Be sure to select the crew members who will best avoid unwanted attention, and outfit them with silenced weapons and gear that preferably does not go BOOM.
Keep a close eye on guards, cameras, and nosy civilians. Be mindful not to draw too much attention, the game works on an awareness system. Three strikes, and you’ll be forced to go loud. Trespassing, lockpicking, and doing suspicious activities like running or crouching in public areas will bring unwanted attention.
6. Going Loud
When being sneaky fails you, or the gig requires you to make a little noise, be prepared for a fight. Police are quick to respond, and depending on your standing in the city, they may bring out the big guns sooner rather than later. In these situations, especially on higher difficulties, you best hope you brought the right people and gear.
Keep close to your team; the quicker you separate, the sooner you’ll each be picked off one by one. Stay in cover and make good use of the gear you brought, such as the C4 or the ‘berserk’ booster. If the Boss is on the team, he takes priority, even over the loot. When Travis Baker is out, the mission and your current campaign run is a wash.
Remember, knowing when to cut your losses and retreat is vital. Replacing dead crew members costs more than leaving behind a few bags of loot.
7. Deadly Turfwar
There are plenty of rivals in the City of Rockay who want the crown as badly as you do. Get ready to attack their territories and defend yours in a gangland turf war. Hire soldiers to attack multiple turfs a day and send your toughest enforcer, Touchdown, to fend off any attacks. Upgrade your soldiers’ equipment with cash or strike trade deals to give them the firepower they need to take on more challenging opposition.
8. Alone or With Friends
Experience Crime Boss your way, whether solo or with friends. Dive into the roguelite campaign, Baker’s Battle, on your own, or join one of three multiplayer co-op game modes. Engage in single-player heists with friends through standalone missions or use the shuffle feature for a randomized series of back-to-back heists. Multiplayer also features ‘Urban Legends,’ a narrative-driven mode where you and your friends select from pre-chosen heisters to tackle multiple jobs culminating in a major final score. Easily find servers or use the quick-join button to jump straight into the action.
9. Progression
As you progress through the game, whether in the roguelite campaign or multiplayer mode, you’ll accumulate experience. With each level gained, you’ll have the opportunity to choose one of three unlockable rewards. These may include new heisters, weapons, equipment, perks, and weapon skins. Some of these unlockables are exclusively available online, allowing you to craft your own criminal legend in Crime Boss multiplayer.
There are dozens of weapons including melee, handguns, SMGs, rifles, shotguns, and LMGs as well as a wide array of equipment such as grenades, throwing knives, booster shots, sensor grenades, and more. Additionally, multiple perks that change the way you play, like the ‘Ghost’ perk which slows detection speed or ‘Toolkit’ which regenerates your equipment faster, are also available. As you level up, rarer weapons and equipment will become available for purchase, providing you with the extra firepower needed to tackle the more challenging heists on higher difficulties. Given that the game sees regular updates, you can be sure that your available stockpile will only continue to expand.
10. Craft Your Build
In multiplayer, you can select from a diverse range of boss skins to tailor your appearance as a heist mastermind. Equip yourself with the finest weapons and gear and customize your firearms to set yourself apart from your crew. Strategically choose perks to optimize your boss and maintain clear communication with your team to improve your chances of success. As you progress and earn respect, observe how your surroundings evolve.
