RockON in Crime Boss: Rockay City
Crime! That’s right! The biggest word on the street today is CRIME! Crime is on everyone’s minds – from the humble greengrocer to the not so humble greengrocer/money launderer. Some have crime on their mind even more than others. Those with their goals set for the skies – the skies lined with skyscrapers. Skies lined with skyscrapers belonging to Rockay City.
With this new trend of wanting to become the latest and greatest crime boss – we at RockON Magazine are wondering, do YOU have what it takes to become the next great criminal head honcho? We sent our features editor out into the mean streets of Rockay City to find out how it can be done.
Feature Report by Fran Ann SherGann
Do you have what it takes? Sounds like a simple question, right? Well upon reaching some of the most crime ridden areas of Rockay City, I believe I have worked out how you can become Rockay City’s new King… without getting slaughtered straight away! I shadowed wannabe crime boss, Travis Baker, on his endeavour to become the next big thing in Rockay City.
Travis Baker wants to make Rockay City his own! (Single player mode)
Travis Baker – a small time drug dealer who wants to become the new King of Rockay city – has been tasked with taking over the various districts of Rockay City. These districts are controlled by rival bosses and Baker will need to remove them and conquer these territories to expand his empire.
The city is divided up into coloured territories. Each colour represents a territory occupied by someone else in Rockay City. It could be a rival boss (Dollar Dragon, Hielo, and Khan) or it could be the new law in town, Sheriff Norris.
The Sheriff doesn’t take any of the areas, but the map indicates where his detectives are currently clearing up the gangs.
If you want to become a crime boss, you need to work hard and get a team together. But where do you start?
On the map you will select various missions, then select the crew you – then you go out on your mission. Well, that seems easy! But, choose carefully, because all of your options can influence what happens. For example, who you take with you on a mission and how many people you take with you can alter how much cash and respect you get (and how many ways you need to split it).
Do you want to risk losing a mission because you held too many of your crew back? Do you want to risk losing Baker? If Baker dies, then the game ends… oof. Yeah you heard me right, Baker can die. This is where things become strategic and you must think about what heists to do and who are the right people to send on those heists – because your crew can also die – and if they die, they are dead for the rest of the campaign.
There are missions where you’ve given choices depending on what decisions you’ve made – different plot lines will then open up. Depending on the results of the missions will depend on how the plot line will progress. As you play, your ‘boss level’ will raise and this will bring certain benefits – additional health, starting cash, etc. This will carry over between your playthroughs. So it’s actually ok to fail.
So after completing various tasks, taken over a few districts and have run out of things to do, you have to end your day and then you can continue with the story.
Turf Wars – you play as one of many!
The purpose of heists is to get money (and who doesn’t want a jaunty new purse). A healthy flow of money is important because taking over a city costs a lot of money. After doing various small heists to build up extra money, taking a bullet to the knee and walking into a few story missions that I probably shouldn’t have been a part of, you will come across new territories. It’s likely you will become involved in a turf war with the rival boss and their thugs. And this is where Baker’s trusted friend, Touchdown comes into play. Nice guy, nice green hair, nice to have him on your team.
Touchdown is ex-army, an ex-professional football player and an excellent part of Baker’s team – loyal and very competitive. Using his skills on the field, he leads Baker’s crew into the turf wars. Turf Wars are where you either take control of an area from a rival boss, or you need to protect an area you have under control from attackers. You basically play as the entire team – until you either take the turf, which leads to new income streams, new respect and new mission options or lose your team and lose the turf.
Sheriff Norris has come to town!
Rockay City has recently acquired a new Sheriff, Sheriff Norris!
A former Marine and modern-day ranger, Sheriff Norris won’t stand for crime and has promised to crush everyone who crosses the law!
Welcome to Rockay City Sheriff! Please concentrate on eating donuts (and you lot out there better hope he avoids your illegal activities). Because the donuts he eats are made of steel, and he wants to take a bite out of crime.
The Turf War-drobe
Staying stylish while conquering territories is important. Each Rockay City heister has their own unique style. As seen on our unique heister, Volk, he is very much ROCKING the patterned parachute pant – and our RockON magazine style guru is OBSESSED!
“Volk is very much on trend right now. The wide leg is somehow flattering on everyone – softens away even the most athletic ankle!” – Francine Gasoline, Style Guru
