Get Together With 505 Games - Thomas Simpson
Hi everyone and welcome back to our ‘Get Together with 505 Games’ blog. The reception to our first blog was really positive, (thank you, all) so we’re super excited to be preparing more of these for the months ahead! This week, we want to introduce you to Thomas Simpson, Global Brand Manager here at 505 Games…
Thomas Simpson, Global Brand Manager
Q: Hi Tom! So… What is it you do here at 505 Games?
A: I’m the Global Brand Manager for Portal Knights here at 505 Games which means I help make important decisions on Brand Strategy, such as what content should be added to the game or how often we should release content updates along with a ton of other stuff! The role really keeps me on my toes as I need to manage the day to day life for Portal Knights and the industry has a way of throwing a few surprises at you!
Q: What do you enjoy the most about working at 505 Games?
A: It’s all fun and games here at 505 Games, quite literally. I’m very lucky to be working on products that I truly enjoy playing in my own free time. Being able to influence how a game evolves is a very rewarding experience. That aside, I would also say working with a fabulous team of like-minded and enthusiastic people. We all strive to make our products a success and that enthusiasm is infectious!
Q: Have you always wanted to be a Global Brand Manager?
A: I’ve always been interested in Marketing. I studied Marketing at University and my career since has largely been within this field. Moving into a Brand role at 505 Games has offered new challenges and the day to day jobs are different but I thoroughly enjoy my job!
Q: Which title/s are you currently working on?
A: At the moment I’m working on Portal Knights!
Q: Have you always wanted to work in the game industry?
A: I’ve wanted to work in the games industry for a long time. Ever since I was a teenager, I would regularly read Games Master magazines and hope that I could one day work on video games! I’ve only recently had the opportunity and my childhood visions of playing video games all day was wildly inaccurate, but I’m still very happy to be where I am now!
Q: Do you have a favourite 505 Games title? If so, what is it and why?
A: Portal Knights, of course! I’ve put a lot of hours into the title across many platforms but to avoid sounding incredibly big headed, I’m a big fan of Laser League and Last Day of June. (Great game, if not an emotional rollercoaster!)
Q: Can you tell us something that many won’t know about you?
A: There’s many things, I’m sure! One thing that surprises most people is that I don’t like gravy or pies. This is especially surprising for my friends from the ‘sunny’ North of England! They don’t approve.
Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in games?
A: For me it was luck… I was in the right place at the right time. That said, I would strongly advise anyone wanting to pursue a career in games to network as much as possible as you never know who might be able to help you! Also, be sure to check out places where job listings are posted to get your foot in the door. GamesIndustry.biz and MCV can be quite helpful for anyone starting their search!
