Get Together With 505 Games - Melissa Duncan

Another week, another ‘Get Together with 505 Games’ blog. Once again, we want to introduce you to more of our awesome 505 Games family. This week, say hello to the brilliant, Melissa Duncan, Creative Artworker here at 505 Games…

Melissa Duncan, Creative Artworker

Q: Hi Mel! So… What is it you do here at 505 Games?

A: I’m the Creative Artworker and I LOVE IT! I’ve been here just over a year now and still have to pinch myself now and again to make sure it’s real! My role is to put together all the retail packaging covers for our new titles on multiple platforms: PS4, Xbox, PC and Nintendo Switch. I find it crazy to see the work I’ve helped put together out in shops, on the social channels and in magazines. I feel so lucky to be a part of 505 and to do what I do.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about working at 505 Games?

A: I love absolutely everything! But… I guess if I had to choose, it would be receiving the news of a new title release as I can’t wait to hear what it’s about. I then get ready to work on it by creating advertising materials ready for launch, I put the packaging together ready for printing, right through to seeing it display beautifully in the shops. I also enjoy receiving requests for new ideas on our free to play games, it really gets my creative mind flowing and I love to be challenged.

Q: Have you always wanted to be a Creative Artworker?

A: I’ve always wanted to be involved in art and design! I noticed I had a flair for it at a young age where I used to draw my parents and siblings pictures constantly. (I’m sure they got sick of it in the end.) I first studied Fine art and Life Drawing, which developed into Photography and then Graphic Design.

Q: Which title/s are you currently working on?

A: There are a few titles I’m working on at the moment and I can’t wait to get them finished so I can see them displayed in the shops alongside my recent ones, which include Dead by Daylight, Inside Limbo and Raid: World War II, just to name a few. As you can see I work on multiple titles at once so no day is the same for me!

Q: Have you always wanted to work in the game industry?

A: To be honest I hadn’t really thought about it, all I knew I wanted to do was become a Creative Artworker / Graphic Designer and see my work out for the world to see. I wanted that feeling of “wow I did that”. So, when I received the call for this particular job role at 505 I was stunned as I couldn’t believe they were interested in me. This was a dream opportunity that I worked so hard for.

Q: Do you have a favourite 505 Games title? If so, what is it and why?

A: My top two would have to be Assetto Corsa and Last Day of June. I love to play Assetto Corsa with my partner and little brother, I get very competitive as I must beat the boys!!! Last Day of June is very emotional and I was hooked on the journey from start to finish, it’s a great story!

Q: Can you tell us something that many won’t know about you?

A: I’m also a qualified Hairdresser as I once thought this was the path I wanted to take! I really enjoyed creating wedding hair styles / playing with crazy colours to create new looks. Another thing, I have never had KFC (but love chicken). I also like Weetabix with butter! (I really do hope i’m not alone out there and other people will relate, haha!)

Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in games?

A: My advice to anyone would be to work hard and study as much as you can. Always find opportunities to do work experience as this helps with gaining experience and knowledge for the role you are after. And finally NEVER give up NEVER underestimate yourself. If you want something bad enough you WILL achieve it!…. Trust me, I know!

Up next… Arsen Nazaryan, Assistant Producer. Come back next week!
