Get Together With 505 Games - Antonela Pounder

It’s “Get Together with 505 Games” time! This time the lights of the stage shine upon Antonela Pounder, our Senior Community Manager here at 505 Games!

Antonela Pounder, Senior Brand Community Manager

Q: Hi Antonela! So… What is it you do here at 505 Games?

A: I’m a Senior Brand Community Manager and been a part of the 505 Games family since the start of 2016. Working in community management is a LOT of fun and no day is the same in our lands! Our role involves listening and engaging with our player base, discussing their feedback with our developers, showcasing what we’re up to behind the scenes, creating shiny assets, planning, reporting back to the business on what’s working and what’s not, putting fires out across social and much, much more! Believe it or not, I don’t just sit on Facebook and Twitter all day, like some people think! 😉

Q: What do you enjoy the most about working at 505 Games?

A: There are a lot of things I enjoy about working at 505 Games! I love the wide range of different titles we have the opportunity to work on, as well as the freedom to be able to express ideas and execute them. Community Managers can really experiment with content for our channels too, which is great! If something works? Brilliant, nice work! If an idea isn’t so successful, that’s absolutely fine. You learn from it, share best practices with other members of the team and move onto other ideas / plans you have.

I feel immensely lucky to be honest… I get to work with the most amazing group of people, many which I’m able to call friends. Working with so many like-minded people is pretty sweet. These people are not only colleagues, but they’re teammates. We go through the highs and lows together and always encourage one another to keep going and keep pushing. My confidence has increased hugely since working alongside these guys – They really bring out the best in you.

Q: Have you always wanted to work in Community Management?

A: The dream was always to get into video games or animation, but actually as a 3D artist. It wasn’t until I got into the industry did I realise that Community Management was more my thing and that was in fact my dream role. I absolutely LOVE engaging with our players and giving them as much of an insight into what we do. Growing up, I barely got an insight into what goes on behind the scenes, so now with all the tech and resources available to us, I want to use them as much as possible, to be as transparent and open with our players as we can be!

Q: Which title/s are you currently working on?

A: I’m currently working on 5 titles, all very, very different from one another – No Man’s Sky (Xbox One) Laser League, Portal Knights, Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione. I also take care of the 505 Games corporate channels, along with our other Community Managers.

Q: Have you always wanted to work in the game industry?

A: Yes – Since I was very young! The dream way back when was to one day see my name on the credits of a game I’ve worked on. Achieving that has been a dream come true. I was heavily inspired growing up by franchises such as Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot and Pokemon. Still to this day, I’m obsessed with these games. (Anyone who follows me on Twitter will know this)

Q: Do you have a favourite 505 Games title? If so, what is it and why?

A: Portal Knights is very, very close to my heart. I’ve been on the project since we launched into Early Access back in February 2016 and seen it grow a great deal into what it is today. However, I’m a big fan of Abzu. It’s such a relaxing experience and is literally the perfect stress reliever. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t played it yet! I’m also a huge Laser League fan. We have a lot of fun in the office here playing that game together.

Q: Can you tell us something that many won’t know about you?

A: I’m absolutely terrified of moths. Nothing comes close. You’ll never find me in the same room as one. Ever. *Shudders*…

Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in games?

A: Never, ever give up! It can be difficult to get your foot in the door but trust me… It’s worth the effort! Another piece of advice, aimed particularly towards those currently in education, is to take group work seriously! As frustrating as the process can be, it’s invaluable experience.

One other thing… Never be afraid to try different things away from your goal! You might find that dream role, is actually not where you’ve been focusing your efforts, but elsewhere! I applied for a job as a 3D artist a few years ago and had to undergo a practical test as part of the interview process. Truth is, I just wasn’t happy during that time. It became very clear that something wasn’t right. This wasn’t what I was set out to do. At that point, I realised it wasn’t the field for me. Thankfully Community Management came about, and I found myself happy and thriving in that role.

Be open minded. I’m now the happiest I’ve ever been and working in my dream role. It’s very weird, aiming for something for so many years then suddenly changing direction! Same industry mind you, just a very different field. Don’t ever be afraid to try out new things.
